Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Power: What It Means For Your Home

What single-phase and three-phase power actually mean, how to tell which one your home has, and why it changes your solar, battery and EV charger options.
Before you install solar, a home battery or an EV charger, one detail on your switchboard shapes almost every choice that follows: whether your home is single-phase or three-phase. It affects how much solar you can export, how a battery backs up your home, and how fast you can charge a car. Here is what the two mean in plain English.
Power delivered in one wave, or three
Electricity from the grid arrives as an alternating current — a wave that rises and falls many times a second. A single-phase supply delivers that power on one wave (one active wire). A three-phase supply delivers it on three waves, staggered so that as one dips another is peaking, giving a smoother, higher total capacity (three active wires).
Most existing Australian homes are single-phase, which is fine for typical household loads. Larger homes, all-electric homes, and newer builds are increasingly three-phase because they run more heavy appliances at once — ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a pool, and now an EV charger.
How to tell which one you have
You don't need an electrician to make a good first guess:
- Look at your main switch in the switchboard. A single, narrow main switch usually means single-phase; a wide main switch spanning three poles (or three linked switches) usually means three-phase.
- Check the cable entering the meter — three active conductors plus a neutral points to three-phase.
- Your electricity bill or meter may list the phase, or your distributor can confirm it.
When in doubt, a licensed installer confirms it during the site assessment — it's one of the first things we check.
Why it matters for solar
Your network distributor sets an export limit — how much solar you can send back to the grid — and it is often set per phase. On a single-phase connection a common limit is around 5 kW of export; a three-phase connection can allow more (frequently up to around 15 kW, subject to your distributor). If you want a large solar system, three-phase gives you more room to export rather than being capped.
Why it matters for a home battery
The battery system must match your supply. The important nuance is backup: in a three-phase home, loads are spread across all three phases, so backing up the whole home during a blackout needs a battery system designed for three-phase backup. Why it matters for EV charging
A single-phase home typically tops out around a 7 kW AC charger. A three-phase supply supports faster AC charging (commonly up to around 22 kW), so the car fills in a fraction of the time. If you drive a lot, three-phase is worth factoring in. More on this in solar-first EV charging at home.
Can you upgrade from single to three-phase?
Yes — but it involves your distributor, new wiring from the street or meter, switchboard work and cost, so it's only worth it if your plans genuinely need it (a big solar system, three-phase backup, fast EV charging, or heavy all-electric loads). Often the smarter move is to design a single-phase system well rather than upgrade.
