Rebates
Sydney households can stack two incentives. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which began on 1 July 2025, provides a discount on the upfront cost of installing an eligible battery (roughly 5–100 kWh). From 1 May 2026 the discount moved to a tiered rate by battery size, designed to keep the saving at around 25% across small, medium and large systems.
On top of that, the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) pays an incentive — typically $1,000–$1,500+, varying with battery size and certificate prices — when you connect your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Since 1 July 2026 batteries up to 50 kWh qualify and rooftop solar is no longer required. The two programs stack — as a guide, the NSW Government has said a typical 11.5 kWh system can attract combined support approaching $5,000.

The rules that shape a good install here — networks, export limits and tariffs as they stand in 2026.
Metro Sydney is split between Ausgrid (Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Sutherland Shire, North Shore, Northern Beaches) and Endeavour Energy (Hills District, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool and Greater Western Sydney). Endeavour applies a 5 kW per-phase export limit, with its Flexible Exports program lifting that to up to 10 kW when the network has capacity. Which network you are on shapes how your system should be sized — we check it as part of your design.
Ausgrid’s two-way tariff charges a small fee for midday exports above a free threshold and pays a reward (3.85 c/kWh in 2025–26) for exports between 4–9 pm. A battery turns that rule to your advantage: store the midday surplus, then use or export it in the paid evening window.
IPART’s all-day feed-in benchmark for 2026–27 sits around 3.4–6.5 c/kWh, while its evening (4–9 pm) benchmarks are several times higher — and retailers are not required to follow either. Midday exports earn less every year, which is exactly the gap a battery closes.
From 1 September 2026 the PDRS extends to apartment buildings (the BESS3 activity), on top of the VPP incentive for houses. If you live in a strata building, options are opening up — ask us what applies to your address.
Why a battery here
Sydney has high solar uptake but relatively low feed-in tariffs, which means exporting surplus solar to the grid often earns far less than what you pay to buy power back in the evening. A battery closes that gap by storing your own solar for use at night and during the morning and evening peaks.
Sydney’s climate is well suited to solar-plus-battery: strong year-round generation, and warm summers that drive air-conditioning demand into the evening — exactly when stored battery energy is most valuable. Adding backup also helps during storm-related outages, which parts of Greater Sydney experience each year.
