How to Apply for the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan: Step-by-Step Guide

A practical guide to checking eligibility, planning an energy upgrade, getting a quote and applying for the NSW Home Energy Saver loan by Brighte.
Planning solar, a home battery or an EV charger but concerned about the upfront cost? The NSW Government's Home Energy Saver program may help eligible households spread the cost of an approved energy-saving upgrade.
The Home Energy Saver loan by Brighte is a 0% interest, no-fee loan from $2,000 to $15,000, with terms of up to 10 years. It can support eligible solar, home battery and EV charger projects, among other approved upgrades. It is funded by the NSW Government and delivered by Brighte. It is a loan, not a rebate or grant, and every application remains subject to eligibility and Brighte's credit assessment.
This guide explains the practical steps from choosing an upgrade to arranging an installation. For the complete program overview, see our NSW Home Energy Saver loan guide.

Step 1: Check the basic eligibility requirements
Before choosing equipment or requesting a quote, use this quick self-check. It is for you to assess whether the program may suit your circumstances, not a loan approval.
Before you apply
Quick customer self-check
- The property you are upgrading is in NSW.
- You own the property, either as an owner-occupier or landlord.
- You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Your combined annual taxable household income is no more than $210,000.
- The property is not social housing or short-stay accommodation.
- You understand that Brighte will still carry out its own credit assessment.
Landlords may be eligible for qualifying NSW properties, while renters are not eligible under the listed program requirements. Always check the current Brighte eligibility criteria before you commit to an upgrade.
Step 2: Decide what your home actually needs
The best use of the loan is not necessarily the largest amount available. Start with the outcome you want: lower daytime grid use, more solar self-consumption, backup during outages, EV charging or a more comfortable all-electric home.
- High daytime electricity useRooftop solar may reduce the electricity you buy while the sun is up.
- Existing solar with high exportsA home battery may store more of your daytime generation for the evening.
- New solar and storagePlanning them together can give you a system sized around your current and future use.
- An EV or changing householdInclude an eligible EV charger, future charging, heat-pump hot water or electric heating before finalising system size.
Step 3: Get a detailed quote from Sunbridge
A local accredited installer
Need help turning the program into the right system?
Sunbridge is a Brighte-accredited installer and a NETCC Approved Seller. We can assess your usage, existing solar, roof or installation conditions, switchboard, battery, EV charger and backup requirements, then prepare a clear quote for an eligible upgrade. We can also help you understand the application steps and paperwork. Brighte makes the final credit decision.
Book a home energy assessment Explore solar and battery systems
A useful quote should be based on more than an advertised battery size or panel count. It should consider your electricity use, existing equipment, supply phase, switchboard condition, installation access, desired backup circuits and future EV plans. That work helps make sure the finance is supporting a system that suits the home, rather than simply funding a product.
Step 4: Confirm the proposed upgrade is eligible
Brighte currently lists approved categories including solar systems, solar and battery systems, battery storage, EV chargers, hot-water heat pumps, reverse-cycle air conditioning, double glazing, induction cooktops and insulation. The final product and installation must meet program requirements and be installed by an accredited installer.
If you are considering a solar battery, start with our solar battery systems overview before selecting a brand or capacity. A site-specific design is still required.
Step 5: Start the application with your accredited installer
Once you have an eligible upgrade and quote, your accredited installer can help you start the relevant Brighte application pathway. This is why getting the right installer and a clear project quote comes before the finance application. Brighte may ask for identity, property ownership, household income, project and quote details, plus other supporting documents needed for its assessment.
Sunbridge can assist with the project quote and the practical application steps for solar, battery or EV charger upgrades. However, Sunbridge does not approve the loan or guarantee eligibility. Brighte is responsible for the lending decision, approved amount and repayment terms.
Step 6: Review approval and schedule the work
If approved, read the agreement carefully before proceeding. Check the financed amount, repayment amount and frequency, term, any contribution you need to make and all applicable conditions. Zero interest means no interest is charged on the eligible loan; it does not mean there are no repayments.
Once the finance and project requirements are confirmed, the installation can be scheduled. Brighte states that it pays the installer directly after you and the installer confirm the work is complete.
Can you combine the Home Energy Saver discount and loan?
The separate Home Energy Saver discount is not open for applications yet. As at 5 October 2026, the NSW Government lists discount applications as coming soon. When it opens, eligible households may receive up to $4,000 off an approved energy-saving upgrade. This is separate from the loan and is not an amount that can be borrowed.
The proposed discount has different eligibility rules from the loan. The NSW Government says it will be aimed at eligible owners or tenants named on the lease who either have a combined annual household income of up to $80,000 or hold an eligible concession card. The listed cards are the Health Care Card, Low Income Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card and Veteran Gold Card. Approved customers will also need to make a minimum one-off contribution of $200 toward the upgrade.
If you expect to qualify for both forms of support on the same purchase, the current NSW Government advice is to wait for discount applications to open and apply for the discount first. If you apply the loan first, the forthcoming discount cannot be added to that same purchase. Once a discount is approved, an eligible Home Energy Saver loan may be used to cover part of the remaining cost.

Start with the system, then arrange the finance
A 0% interest loan can make an eligible upgrade easier to fund, but it should not determine the system you buy. Start with your home's energy use, current setup and plans for the years ahead. Then use the finance option to support a well-designed project.
